Amber In Effect

Years of buildup led to Tuesday, March 13, at 2 PM. I had finally made an endocrinologist appointment, and had hoped to get a prescription for estrogen.

People had doubted that I would get the script; they said I hadn’t been living long enough as full time, and I’d have to wait a little more.

So on Tuesday, despite a kerfuffle with the insurance, I saw Dr. Karl Z. Nadolsky. Friendly doctor. He asked what the reason for the visit was, and I told him.

He asked my story; I said that I’d been living as close to full time as work and my life would allow. So he nodded. Asked if I’d been doing my research. I said yes.

He said it was time for me to start estrogen and testosterone blockers. We went over my options. Said I wasn’t comfortable giving myself injections, and so we decided on a patch.

Tuesday, I walked out of there beaming. Went over to Out On The Lakeshore to tell them. Hugs all over. They celebrated with me.

Wednesday, I sat down with the HR manager and my supervisor at my job. While they’re not able to have salon days with me, they assured me they support me unconditionally. They also said if I was bullied or harassed, all I need to do is tell them and they would take care of it.

After work, picked up my prescription. Went home, took the patch out of the wrapper, and put it on. Had to snap a picture for Instagram/Facebook, obviously. Took the spironolactone.

Friday, went to Gender SAFE and PFLAG and told them. They celebrated with me.

Saturday, got a message from one of my trans sisters in Grand Rapids. She and her partner assured me that if I need to feel open and vulnerable, I can count on them. I also got an email from my HR manager assuring me of the same thing. I was told mood swings were coming.

Today is day 5 of the journey. Who knows what the future holds? But I am facing it with arms wide open.
